1994 U.S. Department of Treasury vacates the Old Mint Building
February 2002 U.S. Federal Government transfers ownership of the Old Mint Building to the City of San Francisco. Mayor Willie Brown used an 1879-S Vintage silver dollar coined in the Old Mint to pay for the building
June 2005 Negative Declaration (Environmental Assessment) certified (06/23/05)
Date TBD A Storyline committee is created to research and identify the key stories to incorporate into the Mint Projects exhibits. Ira Michael Heyman, previous chancellor of UC Berkeley and former Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, is selected to head the committee;
March 2006 Erik Christoffersen is hired as Executive Director for the Mint Project. Erik has 20 years of experience in strategy, sales, and business development for IBM and several technology oriented start-ups. He has an MBA from Harvard Business School and sits on the boards of Summer Search, The Scandinavian School, and Xpiron
2006 US Treasury sells over 300,000 gold and silver coins honoring the Old Mint. SFMHS will receive approximately $5 million in proceeds from the program for the development of the Old Mint
August 2006 Schematic Design of the Mint Project is completed.
November 2006 Signed Development Agreement and Lease for the Old Mint from the City of San Francisco achieved
January 2007 Museum Design Master Plan Completed
March 2007 Approximately $29 million of the projects estimated $95 development budget has been raised.
June 2007 Design Development of the Mint Project is completed
November 2007 An 18,000 square foot portion of Jesse Street, directly adjacent to the Old Mint building, reopened as San Franciscos newest downtown public space—Mint Plaza. The Mayors Office, Supervisor Daly, the Planning Department and the SFMHS partnered with Martin Building Company to create Mint Plaza and ensure a seamless experience for Mint visitors.
June 2008 Economic Impact Study Completed. Total economic output of over $145 million, plus 1,000 new jobs created during construction, over $45 million in impact annually during operations.
July 2008 HOK is selected as the Mint Projects architect
January 2009 Mint Project capital campaign is launched
June 2009 SFMHS presents its second annual Standing Ovations fundraiser: Rockin The Mint—Celebrating the San Francisco Bay Area Music Scene from the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s.
